PS3 vs XBox Movie Downloads

When Sony announced plans for users to download movies and TV shows via PS3 consoles this summer in the US (Europe and Asia shortly following), all PS3 owners had a smug grins on their faces as their investment seemed money well spent.

However, those smiles will have to wait until the day it becomes reality as insiders at numerous movie studios said they don't yet have deals in place to offer their movies on the PS3. Sony Pictures is believed to be the only one already confirmed.

Sony is looking to compete with XBox Live Video Marketplace by offering the same features plus extra features only available on the PS3. So in addition to standard movie rentals, Sony are talking to potential partners about allowing users to transfer movie downloads to the PSP. It's also thinking about working with the company's own Blu-ray disc format so that users might be able to transfer a copy off the hi-def DVD onto a PS3 or PSP (similar to the "digital copy" for iPods that some studios are starting to offer on DVDs).

However with the extra PS3 features than the XBox Live could mean more complicated contracts with studios, possibly leading to less content for the video download service on launch date.

Sony does have at least one studio backing it up though, and that is Sony Pictures. If they can convince just one other studio to sign on, they will have the same amount of studios Xbox Live Video market place had when it begin at the end of 2006.

But while Sony may feel confident video downloads will be ready to go this summer, it doesn't exactly have a big library lined up. Sources at numerous major studios confirmed they have all talked to Sony, none have yet made a deal. The only one that's definitely on board so far is, for obvious reasons, Sony Pictures.

Of course, if Sony just offers the same options as Xbox Live, it won't have any trouble getting more content since those deals have become pretty much de rigeur in the industry. But if it is indeed looking to do more, that would be a more complicated deal and could mean the PS3 video download store will launch with a more limited offering. Of course, this isn't necessarily a bad thing as Xbox Live Video Marketplace debuted in late 2006 with only buyin from two major movie studios; Warner and Paramount. They then went on to add most of the Hollywood majors, including Fox, Disney, MGM, New Line, and a ton of TV networks.

Topper Howard Stringer also said Sony will launch a streaming video service for its new line of Internet-connected Bravia television sets this fall. The first pic will be Sony's "Hancock," which will be available to stream on Bravia TVs before it's released on DVD.

Stringer said that over the next three fiscal years, through March 2011, Sony intends to put Internet connections in 90% of its electronic devices. Other goals include bringing the videogames group into the black this fiscal year; doubling earnings from Brazil, Russia, India and China to 2 billion yen ($18.6 billion) by fiscal 2010; and reaching 5% operating profits overall.

PS3 Movie Download Hopes

It?s got to be easy. Or at least work, in an easy sort of way. I?m fed up with fiddling about with new technology. But I know (or guess by the reviews I often read!) that Sony pride themselves on functional yet quality design and ease of use rather more than most other companies. Most of the time, when I say I want technology to be easy and functional yet also look nice, I?m talking about all technology that I am going to want to use, but right now I?m talking about downloading movies on the Playstation 3 ? and that?s what everyone else is talking about.

It?s a big thing for Sony, the PS3. I suppose because each time a new games console is developed, it costs millions more than the last version, and the competition gets more intense. Maybe. Maybe that?s just the hype. But I did get a PS3.

I didn?t queue up at midnight or whatever it was people did when it was launched. I just waited for a bit, read some stuff about the PS3 online, reviews about movie downloads, or free downloads, or something to do with the net, so I figured the PS3 was going to work with the internet or be wireless or something cool like that. Then I went out and bought one.

So far I?ve been impressed, but also very much aware that I could have gone out and bought an equally brilliant console from one of the other manufacturers. But now Sony has announced the launch of a movie download service, and after reading the reviews, I?m very keen to find out more. This sounds like something to rival Apple TV!

So, if the movie download service doesn?t require any extra hardware, then I?m saving money already. Not to mention saving on any free downloads that might be on offer though the Sony PS3 movie download service.

The fact is that the advantages and disadvantages of the new Sony Playstation 2 movie download service will be largely based on convenience. Few of us like fiddling around with wires, having to type stuff in web browsers, when watching a movie should be no more than turning on a television and pressing a couple of buttons to play the film.

I quite like the idea that the PS3 could be able to download live television in high definition. HD Movie Downloads on the PS3 is fantastic, but high definition television on the Sony playstation could make things a lot easier ? less boxes and wires to fiddle about with. A few weeks ago, Sony launched a PS3 HD Show (Qore) signalling that Sony are planning more original high-def programming.

Again, it all comes down to convenience. I?m not going to be frustrated if movie downloads or television, or anything else for that matter, can be achieved with a few simple clicks of a button. Otherwise, I?m going to stick with what I know. But what I do know so far is that the PS3 performs wells for the services it has provided so far.

The PS3 is a powerful piece of equipment, so it?s great to see more services like movie downloads being offered by Sony. Seamless control via one unit is definitely what the big computer companies are trying to achieve, because customers not only want to save money, but save time and energy in getting the stuff to work!

It?s not just movie downloads, music, or whether they are pay downloads or free downloads, but the Sony PS3 looks like it?s heading for an all in one entertainment system for the lounge.

My living room has always been computer free. It?d take a lot for what seems to be formerly known as a games console to make the transition from a bedroom or study bound machine to that sacred communal living space! It?s psychological as much as physical. As a society we tend to regard computer type stuff as things that really don?t belong in the living room. Even games consoles, in the days when households maybe only had one television, were quickly put away out of sight after use.

But modern consoles, like the Sony PS3, can look eloquent, minimalist, or just look nice, and importantly, be part of the living room space. With wireless capabilities, there is even more reason not to have to stow them away in a cupboard. Making the PS3 part of the furniture I guess is one of Sony?s goals with this apparently versatile product.

So, am I going to replace my DVD player with the PS3? I guess it?s a possibility, likelihood even. Movie downloads via the PS3 will almost certainly be easier than renting DVDs, or lugging the computer into the front room to download a movie online instead. Computers still don?t quite look good enough, or work in a suitable way, for them to be convenient living room devices. Basically, it?s a bit too fiddly. Televisions you can just switch on and watch, but computers need to boot up, open applications, then spend a while downloading. And television screens are much better to watch in the living room.

Movie downloads on the Sony Playstation 3 are more likely to be an easy to use service because the whole system is set up for easy access entertainment. As with gaming, the PS3, and other consoles for that matter, are geared especially to get straight to the things you want. So any services that are provided with the consoles are going to be as available and easy to access ? at least that is what you?d hope for!

What I?m hoping the PS3 movie downloads service won?t do is waste my time and money, such as waiting too long for downloads, or blips in the connection ? although it?s important to remember that conventional television isn?t 100 percent reliable either. And how many times have you tried to rent a DVD and found it?s already been hired out, or gone to the cinema, queued, only to be told all the seats have been sold?

But I?m trusting that the PS3 movie downloads service will be, at least, brilliantly convenient but until then, I'll continue to use Vizumi.com and watch movie downloads on my laptop.

Sony finally dates PS3 movie download service

Sony has finally dated the much-vaunted PlayStation 3 movie download service, which launches in the States 'this summer'.

Kaz Hirai, head of Sony Computer Entertainment, also noted that Japan and Europe will also get the service later in 2008, with further details to follow from E3 next month.

Interestingly, Hirai also noted that the PlayStation division should be back in the black, achieving profitability again by March 2009.

"PS3 launching movie downloads... Sounds like a sure thing," said PSM3 magazine editor, Dan Dawkins.

"PS3's functionality improves all the time - with a recent PS Store revamp, plus Firmware 2.40 likely to launch, I'm betting, the day of Sony's E3 conference.

"I already use my PS3 as the once-mythical 'black box' that controls the living room, watching HD episodes of US TV streamed off my Mac. A direct service eliminates the mass market barrier to entry, and coupled with Sony's forthcoming PlayTV freeview tuner device, makes PS3 an even more compelling entertainment device for even the most casual users"

"Sony intends to maintain a leading position in its "trillion yen businesses" (LCD TVs, digital imaging, game and mobile phones)," reads the corporate strategy document.

Sony will also "focus on expanding its PC, Blu-ray Disc-related products, and component/semiconductor businesses into "trillion yen businesses" by the end of FY2010."

EzyDVD Launches Movie Downloads to Rent

New Aussie movie download service EzyDownload will initially only work on Windows and Xbox 360, but versions for Mac, Linux, set-top boxes and mobile phones are on the way.

With the future of DVD clearly heading for the downloaded dustbin of history, the EzyDVD online DVD store clearly hopes moving into movie downloads will secure its long term profitability.

The site, a spin-off from successful online and physical DVD retailer EzyDVD, is scheduled for a September 2008 launch.

EzyDownload will use technology acquired from collapsed online media company Reeltime, which promoted the concept of downloads via set-top boxes. Former Reeltime investor and boss Andrew Wilshire is heading up the operation. Despite that pedigree, EzyDVD company director Jim Zavos is adamant that the rollout of multiple platforms will be gradual.

The service will use a custom player from US company ExtendMedia. The initial release will be Windows and Xbox only, but Zavos anticipates offering other versions ? including Mac, Linux, set-top boxes and mobile phones ? if demand is evident.

The main current local competition in Australia for the site is Telstra's Bigpond Movies service (which is similarly Windows only). The threat of Apple's iTunes store (Mac and Windows) also lurks in the background, although the ever-secretive company has given no timeframe for when it might make movies available to Australian consumers (though it did this week launch TV episode downloads in Australia, indicating that movies might not be far away.)

One of BigPond Movies' selling points is that downloads aren't counted against monthly totals for Telstra ISP customers, a key issue given the size of movie files. The visibility of the EzyDVD retail site, which attracts around 40,000 consumers a day, would also help promote the site.

The move for EzyDVD to online movie downloads seems to be a solid step in the right direction.

Movie Downloads Exceed 2.5 billion in 2007

More than 2.5 billion movie files were downloaded worldwide in 2007, 2.5 times more than in 2006, according to figures from the MPA released in Brussels on Monday. The MPA report also revealed that more than 17 million people are simultaneously using the six largest peer-to-peer networks at any one time.

The report revealed that in nine out of 10 cases, camcording was the source of the illegal movies circulating on the Internet. It said camcords are recordings by "release groups," and the tapes are often sold to organized crime networks that use them to produce illegal DVDs on a large scale just a few days after their recording.

The figures were unveiled by the Belgian Anti-piracy Federation and European cinema chain Kinepolis as they launched a new campaign against a recent surge in piracy in theatres with video cameras or cell phones. The campaign involves a blend of deterrents and incentives to clamp down on the phenomenon: Trailers will warn that the full force of the law -- fines of as much as 550,000 euros ($867,000) and three-year jail sentences -- will be heaped on those caught pirating, while other cinema patrons will be tempted with DVD gift packs if they text authorities with tips about pirates operating in the theatre.

Last year, the BAF began using digital techniques to successfully clamp down on piracy through security measures in distribution channels, including the transport firms, distribution centres, laboratories and theaters.

Apple to Sell $110M in Movie Downloads?

iTunes customers are renting and buying 50,000 movies every day, Apple said Thursday. That means the company should push out some 18.25 million movies this year, a huge jump from the 5.7 million in 2007. Apple?s efforts to amp up its video offerings by adding rentals, signing all the major movie studios, and getting new releases at the same time as DVDs are sold appear to be paying off.

Based on a hypothesized average price of $6, Cynthia Brumfield calculates Apple will take in $110 million in movie revenue this year, making it tops in the paid online movie business.

Still, 18.25 million paid downloads is a long way off from the 215 million ABI Research had predicted for 2008. And Apple offers only 2,000 films, compared to Netflix?s streaming library of 10,000 items.

Apple declined to offer a current update on TV show sales, but pointed to the last number it gave out, which put the total at 150 million TV shows sold since being offered for the first time in 2006.

And on a side note: Guess what? Zoolander?s still No. 36 on the current iTunes movie sales leaderboard. Our pal Derek might have trouble turning left, but he doesn?t have any issues pushing digital downloads.

iTunes Movie Downloads Same Day Release as DVD Spells danger for Blu Ray

Apple has announced its iTunes store will release movies for download on the same day they?re available on DVD. It?s a major breakthrough in timing as downloads have traditionally been staggered behind the DVD releases. It also may constitute another minor competitor for Blu-ray although the iTunes movies aren?t in HD.

Most major studios are involved in iTunes movie same-day plan including: 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Warner, Universal, Sony and Lionsgate. Movies will cost 14.99 at the iTunes Store and will of course be subject to all of Apple?s DRM restrictions.

It?s another movie consumer option that will prove a minor competitor to DVD and indirectly with Blu-ray. But all is not lost on disc formats as respected tech-industry bloggers like John Murrell would have you believe.

In his post Murrell points to digital downloads as another nail in the coffin for Blu-ray (and in the long run DVD). But disc formats will remain alive and well for the foreseeable future. The sheer amount of data needed to download a movie is enough to put the average user off, especially when it comes to high def content.

As I peer into the tech-entertainment industry crystal ball disc formats are alive and well for the foreseeable future. Tech industry writers tend to believe that average folks are just as comfortable downloading and storing file libraries. But there are more controversial troubles within the services that make digital downloads possible.

When high-speed Internet providers is also your Cable TV company you better believe they don?t want you downloading TV and movies from iTunes. They will try to stack the deck in favor of their own services. Look at how Canadian cable provider Rogers is nullifying efforts to use digital downloads to replace a cable TV subscription.

Another factor is DRM. Your Apple movies will be subject to sync-requirements to establish a relationship with a specific computer or playback device. This is not just a pain in the butt for users but you should be aware it has potential to render you digital movie library useless in the future.

UK iTunes store finally gets movie downloads

How long has this been coming! It seems an age but finally it's here. From today you can buy and rent movies from iTunes to use on your PC, Mac, iPod or Apple TV in the UK. It's been a year now since Apple TV was launched so it has taken it's time.

So how much does itunes film download cost?
Prices for movies start at 7 for older stuff, and jump to 11 for new releases, which are going to be available on the same day as the DVD comes out. If renting movies is more your bag, those start at 2.50 for old movies and rise to 3.50 for more modern ones. With rentals you get 30 days to start watching your download, and once you've started viewing, you have to finish within 48 hours -- pretty standard.

Now, we'd be foolish to ignore the fact that, once again, we UK residents are paying more for our media than our American counterparts. For example, The Naked Gun 2 : The Smell of Fear costs $2.99 (1.52) to rent and $9.99 (5.10) to buy on the US store. In the UK you can't rent it, and it costs 6.99 ($13.68) to buy -- that's 1 more expensive, even factoring in VAT. You can also buy that film from Play.com, for example, for 5 delivered, which really raises some questions about value for money. The good news is that high-definition versions are available via Apple TV, although predictably they cost 1 more.

In terms of selection, Apple claims there are 700 films available and this represents most of the recent output from the big-name movie studios. Interestingly, Universal's spat with Apple seems to still be going on, and movies from that studio, including the likes of the Bourne films, aren't available.

We don't want to sound too negative although we're sure we do about the arrival of the store, because we're really thrilled that finally movie downloads and rentals are available for our Apple products. We'll be taking a look at the downloads in the near future, assessing the quality and generally debating whether DVD has had its day. So keep an eye on the site.

Sci Fi Movie Downloads

Some of the best science fiction movie downloads can be found at Vizumi.com ranging from free downloads to downloads bundles at 7.99.

This is a great way to find the lesser known Sci Fi Movie downloads along with the most popular movies such as Matrix, Alien, Independence Day, Mad Max, Star Trek and so on.

Sony Launches HD Show For PS3

Sony launches HD show for the Playstation 3. The move could signal plans for more original high-def programming. Sony announced today that it will launch an original High-Definition TV show on gaming for the Play Station 3 video console.

Called Qore, the monthly program will offer news on new PS3 games, game reviews and interviews with game developers. The first episode will be available on June 5.

The show, which can be purchased at the online Play Station store for $2.99 each or annually for $24.99, could be a signal that Sony is preparing to compete with Microsoft's XBox 360 programming service.

In addition to games, XBox 360 offers TV shows and movie downloads over the Internet, something Play Station 3 has not until now. However, Sony has hinted that it might begin offering both SD and HD downloads sometime this year.

And as a studio, Sony could produce original high-def content for the PS3, something that would be difficult for Microsoft to accomplish without partnering with entertainment companies.

"Original content, community-related services and innovative products are a major focus for the Play Station Network this year and we are pleased to introduce Qore exclusively for our customers," Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing for Play Station Network, said in a statement. "Qore is the first step in providing original content dedicated to the Play Station community and evolving the network into a place where our customers can gather, share and discover new forms of entertainment."

Music That Makes The Movie

I saw Iron Man last night. It?s a great movie but I couldn't help but feel that the film is helped big time by the wicked soundtrack including Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Suicidal Tendencies which got me thinking....

What are the movies that have musical moments that just become
scenes that stay with you for life
?

My Top 10 music moments in movies:

1. Say Anything - In Your Eyes (Peter Gabriel)
Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) wants to get the girl (Ione Skye) back. Four words: Boombox over the head.

2. Reality Bites - All I Want is You (U2)
Lelaina Pierce (Winona Ryder) and Troy Dyer (Ethan Hawke) suffer a setback in their relationship, All I Want is You chronicles their separation and ultimately, their reunion.

3. Almost Famous - Tiny Dancer (Elton John)
The singing bus ride is infectious and optimistic.

4. A Life Less Ordinary - Leave (R.E.M.)
Climatic moment of the movie in which Celine (Cameron Diaz) and Robert (Ewan McGregor) face impending death. The car chase set to the song is brilliant.

5. Trainspotting - Lust For Life (Iggy Pop)
Best intro to a movie, ever.

6. Any James Bond theme (with a few exceptions)
You can?t hear the songs on the radio without imagining the suave James Bond.

7. The Breakfast Club - Don?t You Forget About Me (Simple Minds)
Best roll the credits song choice, ever.

8. Pulp Fiction - Girl, You?ll Be a Woman Soon (Urge Overkill)
The lead-up to Uma Thurman?s overdose is a sensual masterpiece thanks to UO?s remake of the Neil Diamond classic.

9. Romeo + Juliet - Kissing You (Des?ree)
The gorgeous introduction of the two star-crossed lovers, Juliet (Claire Danes) and Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio).

10. Wayne?s World - Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
An entire generation rocked out to this hit in their car with their friends after seeing this movie.

Also Into The Wild has an awesome soundtrack by Eddie Vedder and the classic Easy Rider.

Several of these movie score songs are as memorable if not moreso than when an existing song is used. Think about first time you hear the Star Wars theme; the pressure-building da dun, da dun of Jaws; the creepy urgency of the Halloween theme; the victorious Rocky theme.

Everyone?s movie going experience is different; I?d love to hear your thoughts on your Top 10 Movie/Music moments. What songs/movies would you include? Which do you think creates the best moments, scored music or popular songs?

Download Movies in Blockbuster Stores

Blockbuster has been in the news on and off ever since Netflix got to be the video rental Cue-the-CEO king it is today. It?s typical role now is one of a sort of pin cushion which critics jab - most rightly, some wrongly - when drawing comparisons to the invention-turned-marvel that Reed Hastings first established roughly a decade ago.

Evidently the company once again has been making some headlines over past several days. Pieces by Georg Szalai of Hollywood Reporter and Chris Albrecht of NewTeeVee, among others, have documented Blockbuster?s announcement - at its annual shareholder meeting, no less - of its intentions to launch a pilot test of in-store kiosks from which consumers can download full-length movies onto portable devices in a matter of minutes. The trial will be conducted only in a couple of stores within Dallas, Texas, the company?s home city.

Nevermind that the company?s chairman and chief executive, James Keyes, revealed that only Archos devices would be compatible with the kiosks at the start of the program. (He envisions that there might come at time when downloads would require a flat monthly subscription fee and that a portable video player may eventually arrive in consumers? hands entirely subsidized.)

The idea that consumers would be required to physically remove themselves from their homes and visit a brick-and-mortar Blockbuster location in order to download content for $3.99-per-flick (a purchase option will reportedly also be made available) is, frankly, ridiculous.

Offering kiosks to in-store customers to browse movie trailers Movie-Tagline-Writers and special movie extras and so forth is one thing. Casual gaming is also a possibility. Maybe. A really tiny maybe. Such displays might prove effective at giving renters a better look into what they may wish to see on DVD. But for a customer to have to travel to Blockbuster in order to download a movie is simply a disturbingly inefficient concept become reality. And I dare say it will collapse upon itself in the not-too-distant future.

I?ll be honest here. Though Netflix Netflix grew to be the biggest player in the movie rental business, I figured Blockbuster would effectively counter the challenge, that its physical dimensions might work in its favor. And, ideally, they probably would. Sometimes Netflix can?t satisfy a consumer?s craving for a good feature with an hour?s notice. (Unless one?s tastes are entirely premeditated.)

Yet, in the time that Netflix has built itself into a giant, Blockbuster has done little but stumble over itself. Netflix exploited consumers? desire for mailbox convenience when it came to DVD rentals, and it managed to fill a role in the space of time that DVDs were at their most popular and digital film downloads were a mere dream. Blockbuster, rather than address those wants with haste and precision - the option was there, but it chose to stall until the tipping point had been passed - preferred to mimic its core membership and laze. And laze some more.

Now it is all but hoping on a prayer. By offering the promise of downloads. Through its stores. If it would just find a way to cut out the kiosk and serve people as they sit idle on their couches via a seamlessly operable Net-connected set-top box (a la Apple TV New-Digital-TV-Boxes Mar-08 , Amazon-TiVo TiVo , or if streaming video will suffice, Netflix-Roku), the company may well regain some of the relevance it lost way back when. Alas, that seems an expectation, given events of the past several years, that the company?s executive circle apparently cannot meet.

Movie downloads spell the end for DVD

Blu-ray's rise will only delay the eventual demise of digital discs for home viewing.

First came mail-order rental services, now film downloads at the click of a button. DVD rental and retail stores are braced for a fresh onslaught of competition, this time in disc-less form.

The DVD is only 10 years old and yet the doom merchants are predicting it could join the likes of VHS tapes - vanishing from high-street stores and household shelves. With reports that Apple is poised to launch full-length film downloads in Britain and other companies offering their own video-on-demand services, even DVD industry insiders admit the format may eventually die out.

Yet they argue that the collectability of box sets, the convenience of re-watchable discs and the relatively slow growth of downloads mean there is still plenty of life left in the little silver discs.

The British Video Association (BVA), which last month celebrated the DVD's 10-year milestone at a gala dinner complete with metallic dress code, expects to hold more celebrations in a decade's time. Lavinia Carey, head of the industry group, says that while its research shows the growing popularity of services such as the BBC's iPlayer and movie downloads from websites such as Vizumi, consumers still prefer to own - and give as presents - physical copies.

"Lots of people are getting used to the idea of accessing their content online but there is also this collecting habit," she says. "There are so many uses for the physical disc that people won't just drop it like a hot brick.

"Particularly for TV shows, people love the boxed sets; they love to have the collection and they love to be able to watch it when they want."

The BVA concedes that after being largely flat in volume and value terms in recent years, the DVD market is unlikely to see much growth. But digital films will absorb only a fraction of home entertainment spending - about 6% by 2012.

Screen Digest, a media research firm, predicts that by 2012 digitally delivered films will make up 2.6% of total spending of about 2.2bn on full-length films.

That is after including the assumption that films will become available on iTunes movie downloads in Britain later this year. The rest will consist of buying and renting Blu-ray discs and standard DVDs, it predicts. The emergence of high-definition Blu-ray discs is keeping retailers and film studios in an upbeat mood for now.

Kim Bayley, head of the Entertainment Retailers Association, said: "When it comes to movies, image quality is important to consumers, hence the boom in sales of high-definition TVs and so our view is that the most exciting new format of the moment is Blu-ray."

But retailers still have to keep an eye on downloads, she said. "It's important that the video business pays attention to the lessons learned by the music industry with the advent of digital."

Film studios argue Blu-ray will help the overall market grow as consumers seek formats that make the most of their high-definition television sets. Their line on video-on-demand is that it will not compete with DVDs, rather it is just another way to reach customers.

Other industry experts argue that major practical considerations mean that digital has a long way to go before becoming mass market. Helen Davis Jayalath, head of video at Screen Digest, says Apple's iTunes service will capture a "substantial" market share but the total online market will remain small for some years.

"Although all these digital services are generating a huge amount of column inches they are actually not generating a huge amount of revenue yet," she says. "One of the key issues that has been a problem up till now is that most online services don't come with a system for getting that content on to the television, which is where most people want to watch it.

"For them to become mass market it has got to become incredibly easy to watch the films on your television set."

Gary Morris, founder of UK-based download service iLoaded, argues that such technology is already available and that the DVD industry needs to reassess both its forecasts for DVD survival and for digital growth. He is telling investors there will be "mass, mass sales" online in just two years' time.

"In 2010 the DVD market will really notice online and really notice a decline. Five years I would take as the time when very few DVDs are being sold," he said, pointing to the emergence of "intelligent homes" with servers carrying digital files of music and films to pipe into various rooms.

"Over time, DVDs will just become one of those things that were lovely and in a couple of years' time you'll be able to download a Blu-ray two-hour film in probably 10 or 15 minutes. This is very much the dawn of that age in the same way it was with music downloads a few years back."

UK Apple Movie Downloads on the horizon

Apple is rumored to be on the cusp of launching a movie downloads service through iTunes in the UK.

According to a report by The Times newspaper, ?studio sources? have said that Apple will start selling films from four major Hollywood studios: Disney, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox and Time Warner. Some smaller studios, including Lions Gate and MGM, are also thought to be behind Apple.

A specific online launch date isn?t yet known, but the sources apparently revealed that Apple?s not looking to undercut current physical DVD prices. It?s also rumored that films will be available for both permanent download or rental.

Apple?s been testing the water for online movie downloads since 2006, when it posted a Disney TV movie, High School Musical, on the iTunes Music Store. The 487.1MB film was available to download for $10 (5/?7).

In the US, iTunes 7 currently allows film fans to download movies from a whole host of studios, including Miramax, Walt Disney and Universal. Library titles cost $3 and newer releases are $4. HD films can also be rented.
